This is my belief. A bit of straight talk and rampant outrage in a direction that you may not quite expect…. but it may just make some sense once you read it.
SOPA and PIPA were a diversion, so that ACTA could be passed through quietly, with little to no resistance. Do you really think that the RIAA and MPAA, and large supporting corporations hadn’t done their homework on this? It is such an easy thing to make the public look the other way. And the public falls for it every time. SOPA and PIPA had hard written rules, so that it would naturally cause outrage and online protest. While all the attention was on that, it was easy pickins to run the ACT Agreement through the global channels undisturbed. If you want a little more detail on ACTA, it is best to get the sources here… as there is a lot of confusion in regards to what it actually does. For a little more clarity, check out this link.

ACTA is NOT as bad as SOPA or PIPA on the surface, because while it may weigh a little heavier on the sole issue of piracy, it does not change much otherwise. Not immediately at least. But the scary part comes later. One of the things this agreement does is leave open the ability for further restrictions to be passed through without having to go through all the normal channels, reviews and red tape. And believe me, this is a BAD thing. Though this agreement looks pretty benign on the surface, what it really is is a gateway to the further loss of internet freedom for the public. It is important to protest this just as vehemently as SOPA PIPA.
So…. while all this fuels my outrage, and by all means it is significant. See, I’m a musician who long ago stopped believing that I could get anywhere with my songs. Not because of SOPA, PIPA, ACTA or similar. Not because I didn’t have the talent or confidence to pull it off… not becaus pirates were stealing my stuff… but because the large labels, the music industry clamped down so hard on anything they couldn’t control that it squeezed the lifeblood out of all the truly talented artists, and left only those who had little talent, a bland commercial product and were willing to completely sell their soul to the industry. Anyone with talent who didn’t already have an “in”, sucked it up and went independent.
The ultimate reality is this, (and I’m sure many other musicians with some talent feel the same way I do)…. I would rather give my music away or have it downloaded illegally, than give a cent to the corrupt companies that rule the entertainment industry. I truly hope, that when the time to settle with our karma comes around, these people are picking trash off the streets.
Crime is rarely perpetrated without a need. Get used to this thought. It will become more and more prevalent in our minds as the gap between the rich and middle-lower classes become greater. The crime of the upper trickles down to the crime of the lower. It has always been that way. The people who believe law is on their side are ignorant sheep.
What will happen when you can’t afford the simple necessities needed to live? I’ll leave it in your capable hands to decide.
The internet is the last bastion of free information. Other sources of news have already been usurped by large corporations, and feed news that they deem is permissable. Lately, that leaves a lot to be desired, and it will get much much worse. Fighting back is a no-brainer to me. The need to eventually break the law to survive is also a no-brainer (to me).
I say these things at the risk of ridicule. Truthfully, I don’t really care who if affects and who it doesn’t. I don’t have the time to be worried over things like that. But part of my mission is at least getting the truth out there.
